If he really is gone, and it's the wife's/girlfriend's van, it's a shame about the rock through the window. She is probably as afraid of him as anyone else. Maybe she could use a friend? That way you can get the inside scoop on his whereabouts too, and keep an eye out. As for your son, a therapist might be just the thing, sounds like he needs someone to talk to about all that has happened. It's terrible to have to live in fear in your own home, in your own neighborhood, in your own small town. I hope things return to "normal" soon.
(Maybe the lady will move on soon to be with Jack(ass) Rogers?)

something needs to be done about the fact that there is an absentee landlord there. I don't know how it is in Canada, but you should be able to get his address and let him know what type of tenant he has there. If he doesn't take some action then you know he doesn't care,
It takes all kinds to make a world, but frankly you should have the right to NOT have to deal with this. Deeds are public records in the state and available at the County clerks office. Do you have Province Clerks offices, or someplace where deeds are registered? That would be where to find his address.
That woman is probably battered....can you speak to her? And the kids? He probably had them scared out of their minds as well. She may need a friend to push her in the right direction. Maybe some kind of women's advocate group. He sounds like a nut!!!!
What did your husband do? CH would have gone over there and beat the crap over him and would be put away himself. I'd have to hold him back. Not always the right decision on his part!

Please keep us posted....Have you tried looking him up on the internet to see his criminal history? At least you will know what you are up against.
